COUNTRYWIDE STRIKE BY CENTRAL TRADE UNIONS

Shri Tapan Kumar Sen raised a question on countrywide strike by Central Trade Unions in the Rajya Sabha. Shri Bandaru Dattatreya, Honourable Minister of State(IC) For Labour and Employment answered the question on 22.07.2015.

Mr. Shri Tapan Kumar Sen asked whether the Government is aware of the fact that all Central Trade Unions are going to observe countrywide strike on 2 September 2015. He wished to know the steps being taken by Government to meet the demands and requested more details about the demands.

In his response, Mr. Shri Bandaru Dattatreya said that the Government has not received any notice about the strike on 2nd September 2015. However, it is learnt that the Central Trade Unions have proposed strike for that day.

He added that the Central Trade Unions had made representations to the Government with certain demands. These demands include: urgent Governmental measures to contain price rise, unemployment, strict enforcement of basic labour laws, Universal Social Security Cover for all workers, Minimum Wages of Rs. 15,000/- per month, enhanced pension for workers, stoppage of disinvestment in PSUs, stoppage of contractorisation, removal of ceiling on bonus and provident fund, compulsory registration of Trade Unions within 45 days, no amendment to labour laws unilaterally, stopping FDI in Railways, Defence.

Mr. Shri Bandaru Dattatreya said several rounds of discussions have taken place between the Government and the Central Trade Unions on the demands. Recently the Government has constituted an Inter-ministerial Committee of five Union Ministers which is holding discussions with CTUs on their demands.
