MPs alone do not eat the food supplied by railway catering units on the Parliament House complex, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan stressed in the context of a controversy over the subsidy on the food offered there. Mahajan said those with access to this food included the staff of the two Houses of Parliament, security personnel deployed on the complex, journalists, MPs and their guests. An individual alone cannot take a call on the issues involved, she said.Mahajan said she was speaking on the subject as it had been an issue of public discourse for some time after an RTI query revealed that the canteen got a total subsidy of Rs 60.7 crore during the last five years. “It is simple food,” she said, adding that an all-party meeting she convened Monday unanimously agreed that the gamut of pricing, subsidising and qualitative improvement of food and service should be considered by the Committee on Food Management at Parliament House Complex, headed by Jithender Reddy of the Telugu Desam. The joint committee, comprising 15 members, 10 drawn from the Lok Sabha and five from the Rajya Sabha, is mandated to consider the revision of rates of eatables served at these catering units, the level of subsidy on them and other related issues.Mahajan said she has constituted a think-tank, called Speaker’s Research Initiative, which will provide inputs, perspective and information to members on different issues. It would have experts on various subjects. She disclosed that henceforth, the Lok Sabha will pay tribute to armed forces and security forces personnel who sacrifice their lives for the country. This follows a request by the Ministry of Defence.
