Many pensioners hesitate to file their income tax returns, but there is an important piece of information that shows that filing income tax returns can be of great benefit to the families of pensioners when pensioners die due to accidents.

According to Section 166 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (Supreme Court judgment under Civil Appeal No. 9858 of 1953),

If a pensioner dies in an accident, his family is entitled to 10 times the average income of the last three years, provided that he has filed income tax returns for the last three years.

For example:

If the monthly pension of the pensioner is 25000/-, then his annual income will be 25000 X 12= 3,00000/-.  If the average income of the last three years is 300000/-, then his family will get 10 times 3 lakhs - 300000 X 10 = 30,00,000/- 30 lakhs from the government. The court does not require any evidence other than the IT returns. Therefore, the regular filing of IT returns by the pensioner, or even the returns, will go a long way in providing a huge financial relief to the bereaved family in case of death of the pensioner in an accident.

Failure to file IT returns due to ignorance of this information will result in a huge loss to the pensioner's family."

ஓய்வூதியதாரரின் மாதாந்திர ஓய்வூதியம் 25000/- என்றால், அவரது ஆண்டு வருமானம் 25000 X 12= 3,00000/- ஆக இருக்கும். கடந்த மூன்று ஆண்டுகளின் சராசரி வருமானம் 300000/- என்று கூறினால், அவரது குடும்பத்திற்கு அரசாங்கத்திடமிருந்து 10 மடங்கு 3 லட்சங்கள் - 300000 X 10 = 30,00,000/- 30 லட்சம் கிடைக்கும். ஐடி ரிட்டர்ன்களைத் தவிர வேறு எந்த ஆதாரமும் நீதிமன்றத்திற்குத் தேவையில்லை. எனவே, ஓய்வூதியதாரர் தவறாமல் ஐடி ரிட்டர்ன்களை தாக்கல் செய்வது, இல்லை ரிட்டர்ன்கள் கூட, ஓய்வூதியதாரர் விபத்தில் இறந்தால் துயரமடைந்த குடும்பத்திற்கு ஒரு பெரிய பொருளாதார நிவாரணத்தை வழங்குவதில் பெரிதும் உதவும்.
