Indian Navy Chief Inaugurates Nuclear Warfare Training Facility At Lonavala; To Give Officers A Hands-On Experience

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba on Monday (25 March) inaugurated the Indian Navy's Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Training Facility (NBCTF) at INS Shivaji in Lonavala (Maharashtra).

The facility titled "Abhedya", Sanskrit for impenetrable will help train personnel of naval ships that are fitted with nuclear, biological and chemical detection and protection systems.

It should be noted that the facility was constructed ahead of schedule. The agreement for the same was signed between the Indian Navy and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), a public sector unit (PSU) and ‘Abhedya’ was handed over to the Indian Navy on 28 September (2018).

On the occasion, Commodore BB Nagpal, CMD, GSL stated “The timely completion of this project is a reflection of the superior technical design and execution abilities of the Indian Navy and Goa Shipyard Limited. This unique facility will assist Indian Navy in providing realistic simulation of Nuclear, Chemical & Biological warfare to its personnel during their NBC damage control training, which till now was limited to theoretical training largely.”

Aircraft Carriers

Recently, Vice Admiral Karambir Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the ENC, also announced that Eastern Naval Command (ENC) at Vizag would be home to India’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) that is scheduled to be inducted into the Navy by 2020.
