ORDINARY/ENHANCED RATE OF ORDINARY/SPECIAL/LIBERALISED FAMILY PENSION*

*ORDINARY/ENHANCED RATE OF ORDINARY/SPECIAL/LIBERALISED FAMILY PENSION*

*Ordinary Family Pension (Ordinary Family Pension)*.

If a soldier dies in service and if his death is natural and not attributed to military service his widow is sanctioned ordinary family pension(OFP) which is 30% of Last Drawn Emoluments which is 60% of pension had he retired with that length of service and not died. Similarly when an Ex-Serviceman dies his wife is also eligible for Ordinary Family Pension.
Example. Let us take a simple example. If the serving soldier put in 15 years' service and died in service but not due to military duty, then his widow will get 60% of pension had he not died but retired with Qualifying service of 15 years. For the purpose of understanding let us say his pension would have been Rs 30,000. Then the widow gets a pension of Rs 30000 x 0.60 = Rs 18,000 + Dearness Relief.

Generally the wife of serving soldier who died in service gets Enhanced Rate of Ordinary Family Pension which is explained below.
Enhanced Rate of Ordinary Family Pension(EROFP).
If the Ex-Serviceman dies before the age of 67 years then his wife gets pension the same as that of her husband. There are two conditions.
Condition 1.  Age should be less than 67 years.
Condition 2. Till he reaches the age of 67 years (pre - 2016 retired personnel) or 10 years (Post 01 Jan 2016 retired personnel).
*The Enhanced Rate of Ordinary Family Pension is sanctioned to the earliest period*.
Example. Date of Birth of Ex-Serviceman  : 16 Mar 1966.
Date of Retirement: 31 Mar 2001.
Qualifying service : 15 years.
Date of Death : 30 Sep 2020.
The wife gets pension the same as that of her husband either for 7 years from date of death or husband reaching age of 67 years but whichever is earlier.
Age +67 = 16 Mar 1966 + 67 = 2033.
Seven years from date of death : 30 Sep 2020+7 year = 29 Sep 2027.
*Marraiage*.  Child - less widow can remarry. Widow also can marry own brother of her deceased husband.
Purpose.  To help the wife to bring up her children with higher pension.  In this case she gets EROFP till 29 Sep 2027.

*Special Family Pension (SFP)*.
If a serving soldier dies while performing military duties and death is declared as attributable to military service, the wife gets pension known as SFP which is 1.2 times x pension of husband had he not died but retired. The SFP is for the entire family dependent on the earnings of the soldier i.e parents. The widow can remarry but she has to support her children and in laws whose income from all sources is less than Rs 9000 + DR pm.
*Liberalised Family Pension (LFP)*.
If a soldier dies in war or war like operations or moving to battle locations or mine laying or mine clearance operations prior to actual war or died in aid to civil authority or in foreign missions etc, the wife gets pension which is called LFP. She gets 2 x pension of her husband. She is exempted from payment of Income Tax. She can marry but has to support her in-laws whose income from all sources is less than Rs 9,000 + DR. She is known as Veer Nari. All other widows are called simply naris ( and not veer naris. Any widow is not called veer naris but only war widows).
