Retirement Guide for Defence Armed Forces (Army Navy Airforce)
Nominee Verification & Identity

- Aadhaar Card
- PAN Card
- Bank Account
Even minor mismatches can delay pension, insurance claims, and government benefits.
Life Insurance
Serving personnel must purchase a Term Life Insurance policy before retirement, as most insurers do not offer term insurance post-retirement. Early coverage ensures long-term financial security for dependents. Term insurance costs a little.
Pay Records and Income
Safely preserve the following documents:
- Form-16 (last 10 years)
- Pay Slips (last 3 years)
- Complete Basic Pay History (from initial appointment)
- Pay Fixation Proforma
These documents are crucial for pension revision, court cases, or audit queries.

Ensure the LPC is issued correctly, as it is a foundational explanation of final emoluments and recoveries.
Increment Option Verification
Confirm whether your annual increment option (January or July) has been correctly exercised and recorded. Errors here directly affect Last Pay Drawn and Pension.

Obtain and safely keep a copy of the RMB proceedings. This document is vital for:
NE POR (Non-Effective Part-II Order)
Ensure you have a copy of the NE POR, as it confirms the official retirement action.

Discharge Book Verification
Ensure that the Discharge Book is:
- Properly updated
- Error-free
- Reflects correct personal, service, trade, and qualification details
Corrections after retirement are extremely difficult.
Veteran Identity Cards

These documents establish ESM status and eligibility for welfare benefits.
Educational & Service Certificates
Secure original copies of:
- Experience Certificate
- Diploma / Graduation Certificates
- Character Certificate
These are essential for post-retirement employment, PSU jobs, and government schemes.
Important POR Copies
Preserve copies of all important Part-II Orders, especially related to:
- Financial matters
- Promotions
- Claims, recoveries, and punishments
These documents often become decisive evidence in pension and legal cases.
Canteen & Other Facilities
ESM Canteen Card
Apply for a New Ex-Servicemen Canteen Card immediately after retirement to avoid entitlement gaps.
Dependent Canteen Card
Ensure dependent canteen cards are issued correctly to family members.
Nil Luggage Certificate
Obtain the Nil Luggage Certificate for record completeness and audit purposes.
Vehicle & Transport Records
Get Vehicle RC verification/attestation from the Accounts Section, especially if availing vehicle concessions.
Sheet Roll Copy
Preserve a copy of the Sheet Roll, as it may be required for administrative clarifications.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ALL RETIREES
Once retired, corrections in pay, pension, medical records, and service documents become extremely difficult or even impossible.
Therefore, it is strongly advised to complete all verifications and documentation well in advance of the retirement date.
