Territorial Army Completes 62 Years

Territorial Army (TA) came into being after the TERRITORIAL ARMY ACT was passed in Sep 1948. Since then TA has come a long way and today has a strength of approximately 50,000 in 66 TA Battalions. TA is a unique organization with varied types of units like Infantry, Home and Hearth, Oil Sector (ONGC, IOCL, BPCL, HPCL) Railways, General Hospitals and Ecological Task Forces.

TA today is known for its espirit de corps, dedication and professionalism. Units of TA have participated in various operations and wars since 1951 with credit. Departmental TA units of Railways, Oil Sector, and General Hospitals have rendered yeoman service to the nation. Ecological Task Forces of the TA have carved a niche for themselves in the field of environment. The 135 Infantry Battalion (TA) Ecological, ASSAM was recently awarded with the Times of India Social Impact Award in the environment category.

Today a sizeable force of TA continues to be embodied in support of Regular Army in far flung and difficult areas contributing immensely to the cause of Nation’s Security.

Army Chief, Gen VK Singh, was the chief guest at the function which had many veteran terriers present and included Brig KP Singh Deo, (Retd), Ex Minister of the State for Defence and Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Maj DY Sema, the present Power Minister in the Government of Nagaland. Shri MS Dhoni who has been approved for grant of an honorary rank in the ‘Citizen’s Army’ also graced the occasion. As part of the function to commemorate its 62 years of raising, the Territorial Army’s Symphony Orchestra and Mass Pipe Bands will be playing at India Gate on 15 and 16 Oct 2011 for the citizens of the country from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

  1. TA personnel men are equally capable in performing any kind of duty or at times even more flexible than the jawans of any elite wing of regular army –i.e. Indian Army or any other army, the difference lies in the way they are handled at training, during their embodiment , the clarity of duty and dedication and expertise specially at the Jr. Command level. And It will not be exaggerated to say that the TA personnel are really praiseworthy specially keeping in view the pathetic and inhumane condition in which most of the TA personnel’s are performing duties without bothering for their un secured life (being an part time solider)and other comfort, at times even in absence of basic amenities, and this one can easily witness by visiting their camp areas any where in field area of J&K and North east

  2. Being an Officer of the elite force TA which is no doubt having a great history of Service & Loyalty as an integral component of INDIAN ARMY
I have no hesitation to accept that most of the points mentioned in this article are very much true…but in addition of that I would like to utilize this opportunity to put forward some very basic problems which is being faced by TA personnel’s on ground…
As an officer of the TA I really feel pity for my TA personnel , and hope my plea will go up to the authorities concerned so that a positive change can be brought into in the citizens army- TERRITORIAL ARMY.
They must be treated at par as soldiers of Indian army
as TERRITORIAL ARMY being integral component of INDAIAN ARMY
and should be given status of ARMED FORCES VETRENS 9EXSERVICEMAN) on the expiry of their honorable services for having earned regular pay-scales ,Promotion, , and all other service benefits in appropriate scale and the benefit of promotion with due regard to their length of service.
Their pay scales are not inconformity with that of the pay-scales of their counterparts in INDIAN ARMY

There is No reasonable basis for making classification or denial of
Equal promotion with regard to their length of service. is unrealistic, irrational and unconnected with the object sought to be fulfilled and therefore violative of Art. 14 of the Constitution.
This discrimination between the solders of INDIAN ARMY vs a vis TERRITORIAL ARMY is illegal herein they could not be denied the benefits of promotion specially time scale promotion as enjoyed by their counter parts in Indian Army as they were found out to the same and similar nature of work.
Soldiers of volunteer citizen army are Entitled to be equally treated and all the benefits as were conferred and enjoyed by the Indian army soldiers should be extended to them as well.

  3. No Medical facility exist for serving Territorial Army personnel’s when on disembodiment at any Military Hospital, No medical facility exist for Retired Territorial Army Non pensioners at any ECHS polyclinic.

Virtually No attention has been accorded. On this important facet concerning serving and Retired Territorial Personnel’s & their families/dependent.

This sub has been of grave ignorance due to poor care & Mismanagement of Territorial Army
Personnel’s when proceeding on Disembody OR Retiring as Non pensioners. Such state of affair has
eluded the scrutiny of Territorial Army policy matters till date.
Therefore an urgent need to address this core issue for safeguarding Territorial Army personnel’s &
Their dependent families fm medical un –eventualities.
