New Delhi, Sep 7 (PTI) Making available its technologies for commercial purposes, DRDO today launched a special herbal product to cure leucoderma patches in people.
Termed as Lukoskin, the medicine has been developed by DRDO''s Haldwani based lab - Defence Institute of Bio-Energy Research (DIBER)- and would be marketed by AIMIL Pharmaceutical under Transfer of Technology.
"The programme was conceived by former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam during his tenure with the DRDO. It has taken us ten years of research and development to make it. It is going to be a big step in skin care," Chief Controller, Research and Development, DRDO, Dr W Selvamurthy said here.
The medicine has undergone long clinical trials during which it was successfully tested on humans before the technology was certified for commercial production.
The world wide incidence of leucoderma has been reported at one to two per cent but in India it is around four to five per cent. In some parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat it is more than five to eight per cent.
"We have focused on cause of the disease and researched out a comprehensive formulation for management of leucoderma with the help of Himalayan herbs. The herbs which are used as raw material for this medicines are found at an altitude of 5000 to 6000 feet," Director, DIBER, Dr Zakwan Ahmed said.
For the last few years, DRDO has been developing technologies which can be used for producing commercially viable products in collaboration with private industries.
Recently it had launched an anti-mosquito cream which was developed by its scientists for soldiers deployed in jungles and other areas with high prevalence of vector borne diseases.
