CHANDIGARH: Citing historical facts regarding contribution of defence personnel from Punjab in guarding country's territory, various organizations of the ex-servicemen on Monday strongly demanded the Punjab government to exempt the property tax on serving and defence personnel in the state.
In a meeting, held in Chandigarh on Monday, large number of representatives of various ex-servicemen welfare organizations of the state unanimously decided to take up the case of exemption from property tax for defence persons in the state before the state chief minister.
Addressing the gathering, President, the all India Defence Brotherhood Brigadier (Retd) Harwant Singh said that majority of defence personnel retire at young age and settle down in and around their hometowns. The process of rehabilitation calls for considerable readjustment in their lifestyles, as they are suddenly deprived of their full salary, ration and other benefits and their earning capacity is more than halved. Brig Harwant further stated that a large number of states and union territories in the country have exempted the defence personnel from paying the house/property tax, when the house is under self-occupation.
"It may be seen that all the adjoining states Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh have already provided exemption of house tax to the defence personnel, Punjab government should also show solidarity with the soldiers," Harwant Singh appealed.
President of the Punjab unit of the All India Defence Brotherhood,Brig (Retd) K S Kahlon outlined the future line of action in getting the exemption from the property tax. He stated that a delegation of the Brotherhood and other ex-servicemen's organisations would meet the Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab in this regards. "Simultaneously public opinion is being prepared all over Punjab to stress the need of giving exemption from the said tax to the serving and retired soldiers so that their morale remains high to defend the borders of the country with extreme courage and utmost efficiency," Kahlon added.
Many prominent ex-servicemen including Air Marshal Randhir Singh, Air Marshal R S Bedi, Brig R B Singh , Col J S Mand, Maj SS Dhillon and Col C S Khera, Col AS Sandhu, Brig K Krishan were also present on the occasion.
All present strongly urged the chief minister Punjab to exempt the serving and the retired soldiers from the property tax in keeping with Punjab's great tradition in looking after its soldiers with best of consideration, pride and affection.
There are around five lakh retired soldiers in the state of Punjab.
