Award Battle Honours to 1962's unsung Indian heroes
The Issue
The men of 5 Field Regiment, Indian Army, fought one of the most courageous and heartbreaking battles of the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Stationed in the unforgiving mountains of the North-East Frontier Agency (now Arunachal Pradesh), they held their ground in the Tawang and East Kameng sectors against overwhelming odds.
They fought with extraordinary courage. Many were overrun. Many never came home.
Yet more than six decades later, their valour has never been formally recognised with Battle Honours.
5 Field Regiment was deployed as part of the 4th Infantry Division and played a crucial role in slowing the Chinese advance. Their guns provided the last line of defence for thousands of Indian soldiers withdrawing under fire. They stood their ground until they were nearly wiped out.
These men gave India time, hope, and the dignity of resistance.
Their heroism deserves to be remembered — not buried in footnotes.
I am Cheryl Dalby, daughter of the Late Captain John Albert Dalby, IC 5380, who served with 5 Field Regiment and laid down his life in East Kameng during the 1962 war.
My father and his comrades kept faith with India until their last breath.
This petition is my way — and hopefully our way — of keeping faith with them.
Battle Honours are not just ceremonial. They are a nation’s acknowledgment that bravery must be remembered, honoured, and taught to future generations.
By signing this petition, you help us urge the Government of India and the Ministry of Defence to:
Conduct a formal review of the gallant actions of 5 Field Regiment in 1962.
Recognise their service with appropriate Battle Honours.
Ensure this recognition is officially recorded and publicly acknowledged, restoring to these soldiers the honour they earned in blood.
