As per information provided by the Registrar General of India that age-wise houseless population is not available from population census. Hence, information regarding number of houseless senior citizens is not available.
Section 19(1) of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act mandates that the State Government may establish and maintain such number of Old Age Homes at accessible places as it may deem necessary in a phased manner, beginning with at least one in each district to accommodate a minimum of one hundred fifty senior citizens who are indigent. Pursuant to this provision, it is for the State Government to set up old age homes keeping in view the number of indigent Senior Citizens in each district.
This Ministry is implementing a Central Sector Scheme of Integrated Programme for Older Persons (IPOP) under which grants are given to the Panchayati Raj Institutions/Local Bodies, Non-Governmental Voluntary Organisations, Institutions or Organisations set up by Government as autonomous/subordinate bodies, Government Recognised Educational Institutions, Charitable Hospitals/Nursing Homes, and Recognised Youth Organisations such as Nehru Yuvak Kendra Sanghathan (NYKS) and in exceptional cases the State Governments/UT administrations for running and maintenance of Old Age Homes, Day Care Centres, Mobile Medicare Units etc. The main objective of the Scheme is to improve the quality of life of Older Persons by providing basic amenities like shelter, food, medical care and entertainment opportunities etc.
